What do children learn about plant and animal parts in 1st grade?

In 1st grade (ages 6–7), children learn how roots, stems, leaves, flowers and seeds help a plant survive and grow, and how animal parts such as eyes, ears, shells and whiskers help animals. They also see how young plants and animals look like, but not exactly like, their parents. Grade levels vary by country and school.

How does RepeatWatch help with this unit?

Set an A–B loop on the part of a lesson that names each plant part, so your child can point and label along. Slow a fact-filled explanation to 0.75×, save the plant section and the animal section to keys 1–9, and play a parts song on Repeat one.

Frequently asked questions

What should my child be able to do after this unit?

By the end, a child should be able to label the main parts of a plant and say what each does, describe how a body part helps an animal find food or stay safe, and explain how baby animals and seedlings are similar to their parents.

How can I keep sessions short and hands-on?

Watch one short lesson, then look at a real plant or a pet together and name the parts. Use Stop after so a song plays a few times and ends, or set the sleep timer for ten minutes.
