What do children learn about communities in 2nd grade?

In 2nd grade (ages 7–8) children compare urban communities (cities), suburban communities (neighborhoods near a city) and rural communities (farms and small towns). They look at homes, transport and jobs in each, and at how people and community helpers work together.

How can RepeatWatch help with a social studies lesson?

Set an A–B loop on the part that compares city, suburb and countryside so your child can replay it while sorting pictures. Slow it to 0.75x for new words, save each community on keys 1–9, and stop after a few loops.

Frequently asked questions

What should my child be able to do after this unit?

Most children can describe urban, suburban and rural communities, say which kind they live in, and give examples of jobs and ways of getting around in each. Grade levels vary by country and school.

How can we connect this to where we live?

After watching, take a short walk or drive and list what you see: homes, shops, farms, buses or fields. Then decide together whether your area is urban, suburban or rural, using the Twinkl or Homeschool Pop lesson as a guide.
