5th grade Earth's systems and water cycle

Quick answer

In 5th grade (ages 10–11), children learn how Earth's four spheres interact and how water moves through the water cycle. Start with Crash Course Kids "Four Spheres" parts 1 and 2, then FreeSchool and Generation Genius water cycle lessons, and finish with Jack Hartmann's song. Play all on repeat, or loop one diagram.

What does this 5th grade Earth systems unit cover?

It covers the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere and how they interact, where Earth's water is found, how little of it is fresh, and evaporation, condensation and precipitation in the water cycle. By the end a child should label a water cycle diagram and give one example of spheres interacting.

How does RepeatWatch help with the water cycle?

Set an A–B loop on one water cycle diagram and replay it while your child names each step. Use Repeat one on a water cycle song, slow a fast explanation to 0.75×, and save each sphere on keys 1–9.

Frequently asked questions

What grade learns Earth's spheres?

In the US, how the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere interact, and how much of Earth's water is fresh, are usually 5th grade Earth science (ages 10–11). Grade levels vary by country and school, so start wherever your child is.

How can we keep a science session short?

Watch one lesson, then draw the water cycle from memory and check it against the video. Use Stop after N loops so a video ends on its own. Videos play in YouTube's player, so YouTube may show ads.
