How do I talk to my child about differences?

Children notice differences in skin, hair, language, families and abilities early, and often ask about them out loud. A warm, honest answer helps: people are different in many ways and alike in many others, and everyone deserves to be included. A song or story is an easy place to start.

Which videos are for grown-ups?

The last two come from PBS KIDS for Parents' guide on talking with children about race and racism, made for parents and carers. Everything else, from Sesame Street songs to Storyline Online and Brightly read-alouds, is made for children to watch, ideally with you.

Frequently asked questions

Do the videos cover disability and autism too?

Yes. Julia, the Sesame Street Muppet who is autistic, appears in several clips, Daniel Tiger's "When a Friend Needs Different" song is about including a friend who uses crutches, and Xavier Riddle visits a school for deaf students.

Can I play the read-alouds more slowly?

Yes. Set the speed to 0.75× for new readers who want to follow the words, or use an A–B loop to replay a favorite page. Save parts to keys 1–9 to find them again quickly.
