How do I explain empathy to a 6 year old?
Empathy means imagining how someone else feels and caring about it. Sesame Street's version is simple: you know how it hurts when you stub your toe, so you can understand a friend who does the same. Then ask: what could you do to help?
Which videos are for grown-ups?
The last two, from PBS KIDS for Parents, show how Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood and Alma's Way model empathy at school and at home. They are made for parents and carers. The rest of the playlist is for children in grades 1–2 (ages 6–8).
Frequently asked questions
Can I replay one example of empathy?
Yes. Set an A–B loop around the scene, for example the moment a character notices a friend is sad, and RepeatWatch repeats it. Pause and ask your child how that character might feel.
Are these videos safe for children?
Every video comes from an established children's channel or brand, such as Sesame Street, PBS KIDS, ClassDojo, GoNoodle, Khan Academy Kids and Storyline Online. Videos play in YouTube's player, so YouTube may show ads, and it's best to watch together.
