What do children learn about blends and digraphs in 1st grade?
A blend is two consonants where you still hear both sounds, like bl in black or st in stop. A digraph is two letters that make one new sound, like sh in ship or ck in duck. After this unit, a child should read and spell short words with both. Grade levels vary by country and school.
How can RepeatWatch help with phonics practice?
Use Repeat one on a short blend or digraph song so it plays again while your child points to the words. Set an A–B loop on one practice word list, slow it to 0.75× for a new reader, and save each sound to keys 1–9 so you can jump straight back to it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a blend and a digraph?
In a blend, each letter keeps its own sound, like the s and t in stop. In a digraph, the two letters join to make a different sound, like s and h making /sh/ in ship. The Rock ’N Learn and Scratch Garden videos show both with plenty of example words.
How long should a phonics session be?
Short sessions usually work well at this age. Set Stop after N loops on one song, for example three plays, so the video ends on its own, then let your child read a few blend and digraph words on paper or in a book.
