Quick answer
In 1st grade (ages 6–7), children learn that a silent e at the end of a word, often called magic e, makes the vowel say its name, so cap becomes cape. This playlist starts with Scratch Garden’s Vowel Song, then KidsTV123’s Magic E Song, Khan Academy Kids lessons and Alphablocks episodes. Replay any song on repeat.

What do children learn about long vowels in 1st grade?
First graders learn the difference between short and long vowel sounds and read consonant-vowel-consonant-e words such as made, these, time, rope and cube. After this unit, a child should hear when a vowel says its name and read and spell common silent e words. Grade levels vary by country and school.
How can RepeatWatch help a child hear the vowel change?
Set an A–B loop around the moment a video adds the e, such as hop turning into hope, so it replays on its own. Drop the speed to 0.75× so a new reader hears each sound clearly, and save each vowel lesson to keys 1–9.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it called magic e or silent e?
The final e makes no sound of its own, so it is silent, but it changes the vowel before it from short to long. That is why many teachers call it magic e. The Alphablocks and KidsTV123 videos both use the magic e idea.
Do the Alphablocks episodes use British accents?
Yes. Alphablocks is made in the UK, so some vowel sounds may sound a little different from American speech. The silent e pattern is the same, and the Khan Academy Kids and Rock ’N Learn lessons use American voices.
