Which sight words do children learn in 1st grade?
In 1st grade (ages 6–7), many schools use the Dolch first grade list or the first 100 to 200 Fry words. These include after, again, could, every, from, give, has, how, of, some, then, walk, were and when. Lists differ by school and country, so check the words your child’s teacher sends home.
How can RepeatWatch help with sight word practice?
Pick one tricky word, such as could or were, and play its video on Repeat one. Use Stop after N loops so it plays three or four times and then ends. For longer review videos, save each word’s section to keys 1–9 and jump between them.
Frequently asked questions
What should my child be able to do after this unit?
A child should read the first grade words quickly without sounding them out, spell many of them, and spot them in simple books. Pausing a video and asking your child to read the word before it is said is a quick check.
Why are the Jack Hartmann videos labelled with levels?
These videos follow Jan Richardson’s guided reading word lists, which group words by reading level rather than by grade. We picked words from the higher levels that also appear on common first grade lists, and left out the earliest kindergarten words.
