What do children learn about landforms in 2nd grade?

In 2nd grade (ages 7–8) children name landforms such as mountains, hills, valleys, plains and islands, and bodies of water such as oceans, rivers and lakes. They learn that wind and water slowly wear away and move rock and soil, and they read simple maps that show land and water.

How can RepeatWatch help with an earth science lesson?

Loop the part that shows a river carving a canyon with an A–B loop so your child can watch the slow change again. Slow it to 0.75x when new words appear, save each landform on keys 1–9, and use Stop after N loops for short sessions.

Frequently asked questions

What should my child be able to do after this unit?

Most children can name and describe common landforms and bodies of water, find them on a simple map, and explain how wind and water cause erosion over a long time. Grade levels vary by country and school.

Is there a simple erosion activity to try at home?

Build a small hill of sand or soil on a tray and pour water slowly from the top, then blow gently through a straw. Compare what you see with the FreeSchool and Learn Bright videos on water and wind erosion.
