2nd grade shapes and equal parts

Quick answer

In 2nd grade (ages 7–8), children name polygons by their sides and angles and split shapes into equal parts: halves, thirds and fourths. Homeschool Pop's "2D Shapes for Kids", Math with Mr. J polygon and equal parts lessons, and Kids Academy examples lead to Numberock's fractions song. Play all on repeat, or loop one example.

What does this 2nd grade shapes and equal parts unit cover?

It covers triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons by counting sides and vertices, a quick look at faces of 3D shapes, and splitting circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal parts. By the end a child should name a hexagon and shade one third of a shape.

How does RepeatWatch help with shapes and fractions?

Use an A–B loop on the part where a shape is split into equal parts so your child can draw along, or slow it to 0.75×. Put a shape song on Repeat one, save lesson parts on keys 1–9, and use Stop after N loops to keep sessions short.

Frequently asked questions

Do 2nd graders learn fractions?

They learn the language of equal parts: halves, thirds and fourths of a whole shape, and that equal parts of the same whole can look different. Writing fractions with numerators and denominators usually comes in 3rd grade. Grade levels vary by country and school.

What is a polygon?

A polygon is a flat, closed shape made of straight sides, such as a triangle, square or hexagon. A circle is not a polygon because it has no straight sides. Math with Mr. J's "An Intro to Polygons" explains this clearly.
