1st grade shapes, halves and fourths

Quick answer

This playlist covers 1st grade geometry: naming shapes by their sides and corners, building new shapes from old ones, and splitting circles and rectangles into halves and fourths. Khan Academy Kids and Homeschool Pop lessons come first, then Jack Hartmann and Harry Kindergarten shape songs. Put a song on repeat for review.

What do children learn about shapes in 1st grade?

In 1st grade (ages 6–7), children sort shapes by defining attributes, such as the number of sides and corners, rather than color or size. They put shapes together to make new ones, and split circles and rectangles into two or four equal shares called halves and fourths, or quarters.

How can RepeatWatch help with shapes and fractions?

Loop the moment a lesson cuts a shape into equal parts, slow it to 0.75×, and let your child fold a paper square the same way. Play a shapes song on Repeat one, save useful parts to keys 1–9, and use Stop after to end.

Frequently asked questions

What should my child be able to do after this unit?

A child should be able to name common 2D and 3D shapes and describe their sides and corners, combine shapes to make a new one, and split a shape into halves or fourths, knowing that more equal parts means smaller pieces.

Do any videos go beyond 1st grade?

A Kids Academy equal parts lesson is labelled 2nd grade, and some fraction lessons may also show thirds, which usually come in 2nd grade. They work as a preview. Loop the halves and fourths parts to stay with 1st grade work.
