5th grade order of operations videos
Quick answer
In 5th grade (ages 10–11), children use parentheses and brackets in numerical expressions and follow the order of operations. Start with Math Antics "Order Of Operations", then Math with Mr. J PEMDAS lessons, Khan Academy examples and the Numberock PEMDAS rap. Play all on repeat, or loop one tricky example.

What does this order of operations unit cover?
It introduces why we need an agreed order, then parentheses, brackets and braces, multiplying and dividing left to right, and writing and reading numerical expressions such as 2 × (8 + 7). By the end a child should evaluate an expression step by step and turn words into one.
How does RepeatWatch help with PEMDAS?
Set an A–B loop on one worked expression and have your child solve along on paper, then check. Slow a long example to 0.75×, save the introduction and practice parts on keys 1–9, and use Repeat one on the Numberock rap to remember the order.
Frequently asked questions
What grade learns the order of operations?
In the US, the order of operations with parentheses, brackets and braces is usually taught in 5th grade (ages 10–11). Exponents are added in 6th grade. Grade levels vary by country and school, and some countries say BODMAS or BIDMAS instead.
Does multiplication always come before division?
No. Multiplication and division are done together, from left to right, and so are addition and subtraction. That is the most common PEMDAS mistake, and several lessons here, including Math with Mr. J's step-by-step guide, show it with examples.
