6th grade area and surface area videos
Quick answer
In 6th grade (ages 11–12), students find the area of triangles, parallelograms and other polygons, then use nets to find surface area. This playlist opens with Math Antics on area, then moves through Math with Mr. J and Khan Academy lessons on each shape and on nets. Repeat one example with an A–B loop.

What should a 6th grader be able to do after this unit?
Find the area of parallelograms, triangles and trapezoids, break a composite shape into simpler pieces, draw or read a net of a prism, and add the faces to find surface area. Grade levels vary by country and school.
How does RepeatWatch help with area formulas?
Set an A–B loop on the part where a parallelogram is cut and rearranged into a rectangle, and watch it until the formula makes sense. Slow nets to 0.75×, save each shape on keys 1–9, and use Stop after N loops for short sessions.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the area of a triangle half of base times height?
Two copies of any triangle fit together to make a parallelogram with the same base and height. The Khan Academy intuition videos and Math with Mr. J show this with drawings before the formula is used on examples.
What is a net?
A net is a flat pattern that folds up into a 3D shape. Adding the areas of all its faces gives the surface area. The second half of this playlist covers nets of cubes, rectangular prisms and triangular prisms.
