What is place value in grades 1–2?

Place value is knowing that a digit's position sets its value. In first grade (ages 6–7) children see that 34 is 3 tens and 4 ones. In second grade (ages 7–8) they work with hundreds, expanded form and comparing three-digit numbers.

How do I use RepeatWatch to teach place value?

Loop the part of a lesson that groups base ten blocks, slow it to 0.75x and pause so your child can build the same number with blocks or drawings. Save examples to keys 1–9 to compare tens and hundreds side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Why does place value matter so much?

It underpins adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, regrouping, rounding and reading large numbers. Children who understand tens and ones usually find carrying and borrowing far less confusing later.

Do the greater than and less than videos belong here?

Yes. Comparing numbers relies on place value: you look at the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones. The Numberock and Jack Hartmann comparing songs practise exactly that.
