What do children learn about families in 1st grade?
In 1st grade (ages 6–7), children learn that families come in many shapes and sizes, compare life for their grandparents with life today, and explore how families and cultures celebrate traditions and holidays around the world. Grade levels vary by country and school.
How does RepeatWatch help with this unit?
Slow a read-aloud to 0.75× so a new reader can follow the words, and set an A–B loop on a page you want to talk about. Save each holiday video to keys 1–9 for a lesson, and put a family song on Repeat one.
Frequently asked questions
What should my child be able to do after this unit?
By the end, a child should be able to describe their own family and how other families can be different, tell one way life was different long ago, and name a tradition or celebration from their own culture and from another.
How can I make this unit personal?
After a video, ask a grandparent or older relative what school, toys or holidays were like when they were young, or look at old family photos together. Use Stop after or the sleep timer to keep screen time short.
Does the playlist cover every holiday?
No. It introduces a selection of family stories and celebrations from several cultures, chosen from established channels. Add your own family's traditions to the conversation, and check with your child's teacher for the ones covered in class.
