What do children learn about maps and globes in 1st grade?
In 1st grade (ages 6–7), children learn that a map is a flat drawing of a place and a globe is a model of Earth. They use a map key and symbols, find north, south, east and west, tell land from water, and begin naming continents and oceans. Grade levels vary by country and school.
How does RepeatWatch help with map skills?
Set an A–B loop on the part that explains a compass rose or a map key, and pause to find the same thing on a real map. Slow new words to 0.75×, save each skill to keys 1–9, and put the directions song on Repeat one while your child points.
Frequently asked questions
What should my child be able to do after this unit?
By the end, a child should be able to tell a map from a globe, read simple symbols in a map key, use north, south, east and west to describe where something is, and point out land and water on a globe.
How can I practise map skills away from the screen?
Draw a simple map of your child's bedroom or street together with a key, then hide a toy and give directions. Use Stop after so one song plays a few times and ends, keeping screen time short.
