What do children learn about money in grades 1–2?
First graders (ages 6–7) usually learn the names and values of the penny, nickel, dime and quarter. Second graders (ages 7–8) count mixed groups of coins and dollar bills, use the cent and dollar signs, and solve simple money word problems.
How do I use these videos to practise counting coins?
Put real coins on the table and play a counting example. Loop that part with A–B and pause before the answer so your child counts first. Slowing to 0.75x helps when a video counts on by different amounts quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Are these videos about US money only?
Mostly, yes. The coin songs and lessons use US coins and dollars. The Learn Bright videos on needs, wants and financial basics apply anywhere, so they suit families outside the US too.
Which skills help before learning to count money?
Skip counting by 5s, 10s and 25s makes counting coins much easier, because nickels, dimes and quarters follow those patterns. Try our skip counting songs before the money lessons.
