How does a soap and cosmetics business make money?
Makers buy oils, butters, lye, fragrance and packaging, turn them into finished bars, balms or lotions, and sell them at markets, online, wholesale to shops or as custom orders. Profit depends on pricing that covers ingredients, packaging, time, insurance and any testing your country requires.
Why does lye safety matter so much?
Cold and hot process soap is made with sodium hydroxide (lye), which can burn skin and eyes. Makers wear goggles and gloves, add lye to water, never water to lye, work with ventilation away from children and pets, and check every recipe with a lye calculator. Watch the LYE 101 and Soap Making Safety videos first.
Frequently asked questions
Are soap and cosmetics regulated?
Usually, yes. In the US, true soap, cosmetics and products with drug claims fall under different rules, and the FDA oversees cosmetics. The UK and EU require a safety assessment and a responsible person before sale. Rules differ by country, so check your local regulator before you sell.
How do I use RepeatWatch to learn a recipe?
A–B loop the part of a video where the maker weighs ingredients or mixes the lye solution, and slow it to 0.75× so you can follow each step. Save the chapters of long Guild talks on keys 1–9, and replay the labelling sections while you draft your own labels.
Is this legal, tax or financial advice?
No. These videos are educational and not legal, tax, financial or safety certification advice. Labelling rules, product testing, insurance and taxes depend on where you sell, so confirm requirements with your local regulator and a qualified adviser before launching products.
