How to start a bakery business
Quick answer
Start with how a bakery works and what to plan, from Square and Toast, then the rules for selling food from home or a shop, from a US SBDC and the UK Food Standards Agency. Eater and SCORE show real bakeries at work. Press Play all on repeat as a course, or A–B loop one lesson.

How does a bakery make money?
A bakery sells bread, pastries and cakes over the counter, and often earns more from custom orders, wholesale to cafés and shops, and market stalls. Ingredients are cheap but labour and early hours are not, so owners price each item from its full cost and plan production to limit waste.
Can I start a bakery from home?
In many places you can, under home or cottage food rules, but those rules differ widely by country and state. You may need to register, pass an inspection, label allergens and limit what or where you sell. Check with your local authority first.
Frequently asked questions
How can RepeatWatch help me study these videos?
Use an A–B loop to replay one explanation, like how to price a cake or what a cottage food permit covers. Slow to 0.75× to take notes, speed up for review, and save sections of a long webinar to keys 1–9. Play all on repeat works like a course.
Is this legal, tax or financial advice?
No. These videos are for learning only. Food safety, labelling and licensing rules differ by country and change over time, so check your local regulations and get professional advice before you start selling.
