How does a construction business make money?
A contractor prices each job to cover materials, labour, equipment, subcontractors and overhead, then adds a margin. Profit depends on estimating accurately, controlling costs while the job runs and getting paid on time. Many owners start with small residential work and build a reputation before bidding larger projects.
What should I learn first before starting?
Learn to read plans, take off quantities and build an estimate that includes overhead. Then learn contracts, scheduling and job costing. Licences, insurance, bonding and building codes differ by country and region, so check your local regulations before you take on paid work.
Frequently asked questions
How can RepeatWatch help me study these videos?
Set an A–B loop on one worked example, like an overhead calculation, and replay it while you follow along. Slow to 0.75× to take notes, save chapters of long lessons to keys 1–9, or speed a familiar talk up to 1.5×.
Is this legal, tax or financial advice?
No. These videos are educational and mostly reflect US practice. Rules on licensing, contracts, tax and safety vary by country, so speak to a qualified local accountant, lawyer or industry body before making decisions.
