Negative numbers and integers: grades 6–7

Quick answer

This playlist for grades 6–7 (ages 11–13) covers negative numbers, number lines, absolute value and all four operations with integers, with lessons from Math Antics, Math with Mr. J, Khan Academy and FuseSchool. Put one worked example on an A–B loop at 0.75× and let it repeat until the sign rules feel natural.

How does looping one example help with integer rules?

Sign rules are easy to mix up. Loop a single example, such as subtracting a negative, from start to finish. Seeing the same move on the number line several times helps a student connect the rule to what actually happens to the number.

Why use 0.75× speed for number line examples?

Number line examples move fast: a jump left, a jump right, then the answer. At 0.75× a student can follow each jump and count along, then return to normal speed once they can predict the answer before the teacher says it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is subtracting a negative the same as adding?

Taking away a negative amount, like removing a debt, leaves you better off, so the result goes up. Khan Academy's "Subtracting a negative = adding a positive" and Math with Mr. J's number line videos show this step by step.

What order should the videos be watched in?

Start with what integers and negative numbers are, then ordering and absolute value, then adding and subtracting, and finally multiplying and dividing. Math with Mr. J's step-by-step review videos are useful before a test.
