How does a trucking business make money?
A carrier is paid to move freight for shippers, either directly or through freight brokers and load boards. Revenue is usually a rate per load or per mile. Fuel, insurance, truck payments, maintenance, tolls, permits and driver pay come out of that rate, so knowing your cost per mile matters.
How do I use RepeatWatch to learn from these lessons?
The DAT Trucking AMA clips are short, so play them in order as a course. A–B loop the answer about rates or detention and slow it to 0.75× to write down the numbers to check. Speed the longer industry talks to 1.25× when reviewing.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need before hauling freight?
Most countries require a commercial driving licence, vehicle registration, insurance and an operating licence or authority, such as US DOT and MC numbers or a UK operator licence. Requirements differ by country and cargo, so check with your national transport regulator first.
Should I start as a carrier or a broker?
Carriers own or lease trucks and move the freight. Brokers match shippers with carriers and earn a margin without owning trucks, but they need their own licence and strong relationships. Watch the DAT videos on both, then decide which suits your money, skills and time.
Is this legal, tax or financial advice?
No. These videos are educational and not legal, tax, insurance or financial advice. Licensing, safety rules, insurance minimums and taxes differ by country and state, so confirm requirements with your transport regulator and a qualified adviser before you buy a truck or sign a lease.
